Bogus Universities & fake degrees

Tue Oct 14, 2008 9:07 pm by frags

A follow up to the discussion we started way back in the little india days. I found this one article dated Jan 2008 about the now famous International Irish University which i was following closely. It was quite an elaborate operation with graduation ceremonies etc.

Now the website is empty.

Private Tuition

Sun Sep 21, 2008 12:59 am by VJeyaa

Do you send your kids to private tuition after school or do you teach them yourselves? What are the pros and cons of sending kids to private tuition after school? Is it an unnecessary burden for the kids or is it seen as much needed assistance for the kids in terms of education?

Private School

Tue Sep 09, 2008 10:41 pm by VJeyaa

Can someone from the education line give me some pointers about private schooling? I have been thinking about this recently as my daughter has come of enrollment age to the primary school. My current considerations are:

1. Sekolah Sri Murni
2. Sekolah Sri Chempaka
3. Convent Bukit Nenas (my personal preference)

We are also thinking of registering to a nearby G...

i guess its jus a boost for children who are interested and willing to excel...
but it is worthless for children who are not intending to do well and are jus attending classes cos they have to..

Tuition classes needed if our children are slow in capturing the lessons in school. As a parent, we need to assess them first before giving them to other teachers to coach.

Some children are very smart but they don't do well in exams. These kind of children don't need tuition classes but other classes to enrich their knowledge and enhance their ability to think.

There are some children who are basically very slow even in reading. These group need one to one coaching. We cannot send them to mass tuition classes with more than 10 students in a class.

So, parents should understand their kids first. Know their weakness and strenght before choosing a good tuition class for them.

If your kids are doing ok. Don't pressure them but encourage them by giving some attention to what they have to say.

Re: Private Tuition

Post by frags on Tue Sep 23, 2008 1:33 pm

I personally have gone for private tuition when i was schooling as well as private classes. As in small class of 3 to 4 students. I can say this:

Private tuition with more that 15 student is useless. They are generally doing the same thing the teachers at school are doing. Many of such classes try to predict exam questions. That is how they become so popular.

However there are some rare cases of a class of 15 students can be quite effective. I find a really good teacher that can personalise his/her teaching to certain degree to be much more effective at teaching. Since every student is a little different(this is why those small private classes are so bloody effective). At this point i found that what I was being thaught at school started to feel like supplementary stuff and the private classes to be the main source of learning. I never get that with huge tuition classes.

That would be the major weakness of public school. Since classes are big and they focus so much on sylabus(a bit too rigidly), they can easily leave behind the weak or just the disinterested groups. Some students may learn better if taught differently, it is also a matter of personality and psychology of the student.

Our education system focuses too much on pushing kids down a certain path instead of moulding it around the student. So i feel if we can have some sort of paradigm shift or breaktrough in teaching methodology, I think we can tap the good thing that these private classes have.

As a teacher, I am actually on the receiving end (I mean the fees, he he).
The demand for personal tuition is quite high nowadays, to the extent that I'm having tuitions 7 days a week, most of the time, 2 classes per day. The fees, ranging from RM50-80 per hour, do not stop the parents from engaging our services. They are willing to spend thousands of ringgits each month to make sure that their children score well in the exams as many of them lost their hope in the government schools.

Would it be right to say that the majority of these tuition seekers are from the gov't school? Are there any from private schools which seek private tuition?

Parents are not only sending their children because of low quality education in gov schools but to compete with other parents. Most working parents prefer to dump their kids in tuition centres rather spending time with them.

I'm seeing a trend where pre-schools/day care centres being converted into tuition classes in the evening. The children usually stay in the day care centre from noon(after school) to night. The parents conveniently let their kids at places like these to avoid dealing with their kids homeworks and other school works. I don't think these trend is because they are not satisfied with gov schools but because laziness.

Surprisingly, they also seek private tuition. Among the reasons given by the parents are like...'I want to keep my child occupied all the time otherwise he/she will waste his/her time by doing nothing'...'he/she can only study when someone is around to tutor him/her'...

I know a father, having 3 kids in private schools, hire private tutors for all 3 kids and therefore paying them every single day!!! I did my own calculation and estimated that he's spending close to RM7000 a month just for school and tutition fees.

Those days private tuitions r unheard of.... i used to attend tuition classes only during crucial times of my schooling days.. ie.. SRP (eh sorry ah... old timer.. now its PMR) and SPM... and tat too only for BM classes since those days BM was the deciding factor on ur results. But today parents r crazy over classes... not only on studying subject but kids go for swimming classes, music classes, karate classes, mind enhancing classes... classes oh classes... i wonder where do they have the time to b kids and enjoy life for a whole minute! Who do we blame?.... Is it the schools which dont give the parents the confidence in their method of teaching?.. Parents who r power crazy and want their kids to do better than the kid next door?... Too much money and dont know wat to do with it? I wud say give the kids a break..... not able to excel in their education doesn't make them grow up to b horrible adults.. and visa versa. Kids need to enjoy their growing up..... instead of pushing them into every classes available is gonna exhaust them. So only send them to private classes during crucial times...

You are absolutely right. Let the children grow up happily. I want my babies grow up and able to think back their enjoyable childhood. That will be the best gift i can give them. I want them smile and tell their friends about their fantastic years as kids.
