A follow up to the discussion we started way back in the little india days. I found this one article dated Jan 2008 about the now famous International Irish University which i was following closely. It was quite an elaborate operation with graduation ceremonies etc.
Now the website is empty.

Private Tuition
Sun Sep 21, 2008 12:59 am by VJeyaa
Do you send your kids to private tuition after school or do you teach them yourselves? What are the pros and cons of sending kids to private tuition after school? Is it an unnecessary burden for the kids or is it seen as much needed assistance for the kids in terms of education?

Private School

Can someone from the education line give me some pointers about private schooling? I have been thinking about this recently as my daughter has come of enrollment age to the primary school. My current considerations are:

We are also thinking of registering to a nearby Govt school, as a "just in case" scenario. That is a contingency plan, which is just to play safe just in case things dont work out as planned or if its fully booked.
Anyone wise owls out there who can share experiences? Any recommendations?

Re: Private School
Good day pal,
the preferred choice will be 3,2, and 1. Many parents are sending their children to private school nowadays, despite having to pay in between RM6000 to RM12000 per year, compared to 'almost free' government schools.
One of the major reason, shared by many parents, is the quality of education in the government school is very poor, except some well established schools such as Bukit Nenas Convent, MGS, La Salle, VI, St. John etc etc.
Teachers are too preopccupied with paper works, projects and attending courses all year round( plus maternity leave), and students receive minimum input from the teachers and need to depend on their tuition teachers to do well in their exams!
You normally don't see this problem in any private schools. The teacher will always be there. Even if she/he is on leave, the replacement teacher will be there all the time. Competition among private schools to get more students made them work harder and improve further, leaving behind the government school very far away. That's why the parents are willing to pay thousands of ringgits in terms of school fees to enrol their children in private school. As per last year's PMR result, close to 90% of the Sri Cempaka and Sri KDU students scored 'A' for both Maths and Science subjects and it is not an ordinary achievement by any standard.

Re: Private School
When you can spare alot of Vitamin M's for so many other unnecessary things, spending on kid's education is not so bad after all. Its a worthy investment, and your kids will be grateful to you for showing uncommon concern for their wellbeing. Something to ponder.

Re: Private School
Private schools have excellent track records, that is undeniable and the teachers are very commited because they are paid more than 5K and their working environment is similar to coparate level.
Since the parents are paying, the management try very hard to deliver and give the best.
Its a trend in KL now, from the feedbacks i get from my aunts, it is worthwhile to send our kids to private school because we don't have to fork out extra money for music classes, gymnastic or other useful classes we parents usually send our kids to.
In a nutshell, private school is a good choice is you can spare the money.

Private schools and my vote is for Convent .
A good education for better tomorrow. Education is the best asset that you are going to give to your child.

Re: Private School
According to some other lecturers and what i have seen these students do, they are generally much better than govt school students. They are a bit more creative and given more exposure to a wider range of tools and knowledge.
I have seen young kids do simple programming using some high level educational programming language. They are given more freedom to explore different domains than to just focus on scoring straight A's. Definetely a more balanced and wholesome approach to education. IMHO this is what education should be in the first place.
